'Tracht', Dirndl, and Lederhosen – what was all this about?
I think I owe my English language readers some information on my past little series on 'Tracht', traditional Austrian clothing and its incredible come-back in recent years.
It was mostly satire on the amazing fact that all of a sudden almost every single city-dweller seems to own and wear lederhosen and dirndl on many many occasions.
It is nothing against people like the above members of a folk music brass band and their lovely 'sutlers'. Those people live in an unbroken tradition of Tracht.
For many others your urban blogger suspects a politically problematic return of a kind of 'Heimat' love (oh, about this very German and Austrian expression Heimat that can hardly be translated into fatherland or whatever); a return that might be connected with a rejection of the 'international', e.g. the European Union, or the 'foreign' as associated with dark skinned people mostly from South Eastern Europe.
In German there is an expression for 'over-sensitivity' that translates into 'hearing the fleas' coughs'. Maybe your blogger is one of these overly alert specimen; but still where there is resentment one should be watchful.
But one shouldn't be too sure of oneself: maybe it's just a bit of resentment on the part of your usually black-clad blogger?
Remember Johnny Cash? With my greatest respects to the warmth, truthfulness and musicality of this late great man.
